FAQ's

What models do you use?

As part of our web application, we provide numerous forecast products based on the GFS and GFS Ensemble models. In addition, our staff meteorologists analyze and review other forecast models, particularly the ECMWF, to provide insights into model confidence and potential directional impact due to model variance and uncertainty.

When are the emails sent out?

We provide multiple email updates throughout the morning to coincide with forecast model updates. An initial update is delivered at approximately 5:45AM Central to provide a brief update on forecast changes between yesterday’s 18Z forecast and today’s 00Z forecast. A full analysis report is delivered at approximately 6:45AM Central once the full 06Z forecast data is available. Finally, a final update is delivered at approximately 11:45AM Central after the 12Z model run is available.

What are Growing Degree Days (GDDs)?

Growing Degree Days (GDDs) are a measurement of the cumulative amount of heat that has affected the growth of crops at a given location during the growing season. The number of GDDs is indicative of how much growth should have occurred, assuming no extreme effects such as disease or severe drought. Future GDDs can be calculated based on a temperature forecast to allow farmers to anticipate how well their crops might develop in the coming days.
How are GDDs calculated?

The GDD is calculated by first taking the difference between the average temperature (daily high plus the daily low, divided by 2) for each day and a predefined baseline temperature. This is done for each day and accumulated, starting at the beginning of the crop year. Each crop has a unique baseline temperature.
Barley - 40°F
Canola - 41°F
Corn - 50°F
Cotton - 65°F
Wheat - 40°F
Soybeans - 50°F
If the daily low temperature is lower than the baseline temperature for a crop, it is rounded up since no crop development is anticipated. Additionally, there is a general higher limitation of 86°F at which no growth is expected. So, any daily high above this value is rounded down.

What are the different Growing Degree Days (GDDs)?

Difference from Normal:
Difference from the normal number of GDDs since the current season planting date.
Percent of Normal:
Percent difference from the normal number of GDDs since the current season planting date.
Absolute:
Total number of GDDs since the current season planting date.
